She would be better taking an unlocked phone and getting a local payg
sim when she arrives. I'm not aware of any uk networks that have roaming
on payg in malaysia and even then you'd be looking at 30p+ for sending
each sms, receiving is normally free.

Agreed. Any unlocked phone with a local sim - Maxis for example - will
do the job.
