Default payg in malaysia

She would be better taking an unlocked phone and getting a local payg
sim when she arrives. I'm not aware of any uk networks that have roaming
on payg in malaysia and even then you'd be looking at 30p+ for sending
each sms, receiving is normally free.

It might be worth investigating providers who can do data, then use a Java
app on the phone to send texts - then it's just a few pennies per text plus
the data cost (which should be fairly small, even at extortionate-per-KB).

Trouble is, if she gets a local SIM her friends will be paying 20-30p per
text to send to Malaysia, and those won't be covered by inclusive text
packages. Though they could use Java apps too, it all gets a bit messy.

If you find a network with vaguely sensible data tariffs, how about some
kind of IM solution? I have no idea if such is available at low bandwidth
(and people need to know that sending pictures will really cost $$$).

The easier alternative is to train her not to text so much when she's away
