.. . Is it possible to buy
a good quality standalone Skype handset which
will work off Wi-Fi without the need for a mobile network. The
problem I have is that Skype on a "3" mobile will not allow Skype-Out.
Alasdair.
Skype compatible phones are listed
at:http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/mobile/
Or you could set up a skype to sip gateway on a 3 phone
which would get around the skype out problem, and get you cheap calls

On the S2 Skype Out works for international calls - but you need Skype
credit. Skype Out calls to landlines are next to nothing. Calls to
mobiles are expensive and the quality not worth paying for.

Reading the details is easy. Understanding what to do to set it all up
is not. Also you need a 24/7 broadband connection on a static PC to
act as a server. No good for those with a dongle or S2 mobile modem as
his/her only broadband link. CJB.
It's not difficult if you take it step by step.
Last night I made a few minor changes to the wording that might have caused
confusion at a cursory glance.
It is true that you need to run a PC 24/7 and you would have to factor the electricity
costs into the TCO.
Ideally, run it on a PC that needs to be on anyway.
It would be nice to have a free hosting somewhere for the gateway,
it may never happen because of the bandwith involved. The audio streams themselves must
go via the gateway because of the trans-protocol conversion.
You are totally wrong about the need for a static IP address in this project.
and even if it did, we could use dyndns.
