I will be visiting the UK next month and I will need mobile phone
sevicef or about 2 weeks. Roaming is too expensive so I want to get a UK no. temporarily. Is there some kind of prepay SIM card available in the UK? Is it rechargeable( add more money and keep the same no.)? I may go to the UK a few time a year so I don't mind keeping the SIM alive. Can I bring my own phone to use? What band is use in the UK--GSM? PCS? Any advice appreciated. ABC Do not reply by email. Reply to Newsgroup |

No problem, providing you come from a country with a GSM900/1800 phone and it's unlocked... Is there some kind of prepay SIM card available in the UK? Is it rechargeable( add more money and keep the same no.)? I may go to the UK a few time a year so I don't mind keeping the SIM alive. Have alook at the websites, prepay SIM packs are readily obtainable in the High Street or online. www.vodafone.co.uk www.o2.co.uk www.t-mobile.co.uk www.orange.co.uk www.virginmobile.co.uk I would think Virgin (for cost) or possibly Orange (for network) would be the best to go for. the packs tend to be a lot cheaper online but they may not ship abroad. Can I bring my own phone to use? What band is use in the UK--GSM? PCS? Depends if you your Phone is unlocked, if it is, then the answer is yes. Voda and 02 GSM900 (plus some 1800) T & Orange (GSM1800) Any advice appreciated. ABC Do not reply by email. Reply to Newsgroup Patrick Worcs, UK |

Ditto For "pay as you go" use during Peak times - as I suspect you'll be doing, Virgin is the best PAYG provider. Virgin have no peak or offpeak - when I say peak, I am using this as a comparison with other providers. They charge 15p/minute for the first three minutes of the day (NOT call) and then 5p/minute thereafter, for the rest of the day. |

wrotd: Depends if you your Phone is unlocked, if it is, then the answer is yes. What is"unlocked" ? I am from Hong Kong. We can plug in any SIM and use the phone. Same applies when I go to China and NZ and plug in thier prepay SIM. ABC Do not reply by email. Reply to Newsgroup |

wrotd: Most handsets (with a few exceptions) in the UK are heavily subsidised by the operator, they lock the phone to the operator to prevent you using a competitors SIM card in the phone. You can usually get it unlocked fairly easily though.. Patrick I can safely assume that the Hong Kong phones are "unlocked" How does the Orange 'Pay as you go' work? If I keep it topped up, Do I keep the same phone number? ABC Do not reply by email. Reply to Newsgroup |
