Default Forcing 3 phones to use 2g

3's £25 for 500 xnet mins is still a good deal and I'd still like to have
one even though I can't make voice calls where I work (lancaster) on the 3g
network. But, if it was possible to force the phone to use a 2g connection
I'd be alright, is that possible?

From what I understand, Three's phones should automatically switch to a 2G
network whenever it is not possible to use the 3G network.

Problem: lancaster is a 3g area BUT you can't make voicecalls while you're
in that area. Not to a landline, not to 3's voicemail and not to another
mobile network. I've chatted to both The Link and Carphonewarehouse in
lancaster and they both admit you can't make a voice call from their own
shops. When I had a 3 mobile (for a day), 3 said there was nothing wrong
with the lancaster cell, I needed a new handset.

Many people are having similar problems and 3 are making every excuse under
the sun, either it's a sim card fault or a handset fault, but it's not their
fault :-).

You can't force the 3g phones to use a 2g service if it's in 3g coverage,
it'll only switch over when there is no 3g coverage. However, you could
always put the 3 sim into a 2g or 2.5g phone. Here's a list that might help
you, it's an unofficial list of what handsets the 3 sim will and won't work
in: http://www.geocities.com/drtamseel/2ph3sim.html
