Default 6310 "unrepairable", really?

Hi

My 6310 died on me last week, Carphone Warehouse say that the phone isn't
repairable because the on/off switch is broken. I'm a little dubious, but
the text of the engineers report said:

"Land loose on customers tactile switch. Nothing can be done for this
phone, at least not by me"

All gobbledegook to me, but apparently it's something to do with the
connection between the switch and the circuit board (this is all via the
assistant in the shop, I didn't get to speak to the engineer myself). The
engineer aparently said that no one would be able to repair it. Can anyone
else comment on whether this might be fixable?

While I'd love the opportunity to go out and buy a shiny 6310i replacement,
I can't actually afford it at the moment. I'd also like to get my hands on
the 250 or so numbers in my phonebook (although I do have a 3 month old
printout so all is not totally lost...)

Simon

Have you bypassed the switch to see if the phone otherwise works ok?

Thank you, I'll email them to see if they know what the engineer meant, and
whether they can help.

I actually wouldn't know how to - is it easy enough to do? I don't even
have the right screwdriver to take the back off the phone yet, but I suspect
that will be my next purchase...

Just a guess...

If you're lucky it might just be a fracture in the solder, though you'd need
a soldering iron in either case. They're easy to use with a little practice,
so don't let that scare you off. It's pleasing to see someone want to repair
something in this throwaway society.
