I want her to leave her normal phone at home and take a PAYG She would be better taking an unlocked phone and getting a local payg sim when she arrives. I'm not aware of any uk networks that have roaming on payg in malaysia and even then you'd be looking at 30p+ for sending each sms, receiving is normally free. Agreed. Any unlocked phone with a local sim - Maxis for example - will do the job. -- David Kennedy http://www.anindianinexile.com |

It might be worth investigating providers who can do data, then use a Java app on the phone to send texts - then it's just a few pennies per text plus the data cost (which should be fairly small, even at extortionate-per-KB). Trouble is, if she gets a local SIM her friends will be paying 20-30p per text to send to Malaysia, and those won't be covered by inclusive text packages. Though they could use Java apps too, it all gets a bit messy. If you find a network with vaguely sensible data tariffs, how about some kind of IM solution? I have no idea if such is available at low bandwidth (and people need to know that sending pictures will really cost $$$). The easier alternative is to train her not to text so much when she's away ![]() Theo |

Another option might be an 'international' roaming SIM... if you get one with a +44 number from, say, the Isle of Man, that might be covered under her friends text packages. Texts would probably still be cheaper than 20p, but still not very cheap. I just checked 0044's global SIM and to text from Malaysia to UK is 43p. Ouch! But maybe there are others. Theo |

I bought a local SIM card on the DiGi network when I was in Malaysia. International text messages cost RM0.20 (around 3.6p), so she's not going to get much cheaper than that whatever way she does it. If she could borrow another phone to take with her on the trip, or use a dual-SIM phone, then she could use her normal UK SIM car to receive texts from friends in the UK on her normal number. DiGi also have quite good rates on data charges. Internet connections are capped at RM5 per day (around 90p). Chris |
