Default Giffgaff is great - so far...

Many thanks to whomsoever suggested Giffgaff. I ordered a SIM with £10
top-up, activated it, put it into my Nokia, and made a phone call.
Easy. It even reports the top-up balance immediately after terminating
a call or sending a SMS. Now I need to port my regular no. from
Carphone Whorehouse Fresh PAYG contract. Interestingly CPW mailed me a
PAC no. within a week with no attempt to offer me a new deal or to ask
why I was leaving. I suppose they have so many customers that they
don't care about losing any. However one of the real reasons for me
leaving CPW is that for 9 years I have been paying £1 for a regular
itemised but have not received many. I reckomn that they've ripped me
off by at least £100. Numerous promises to credit me some
reimbursement on my PAYG balance has never been actioned. So good
riddance to CPW. Never will I use their services again. CJB.

Fresh is closing down soon anyway.

Whether this is to do with the forthcoming demerger of CPW and TT, I
don'r know.

They are offering people to swap to the other CPW brand Talkmobile,
which lives on Vodafone (but without transfer of remaining credit)

So even swapping number to Talkmobile would need a PAC

The big advantage of giffgaff is their free 0800 access
which you can use with a calling card service like 1899.com
(for non BT lines) giving you calls to UK landlines and international
for as little a 1p per min (plus connection charge)
http://www.1899.com/mobilerates.php

Excessive Calling card use of free 0800 was why 121 and Orange
stopped offering it

My experience with CPW led me to believe that they will try to dupe you
at every opportunity. they are very stressful to deal with and, when
joining them, they won't take no for an answer for their mobile phone
insurance. I went with them for the tariff at the time. The phone they
gave me was reaaaaaly basic and I never used it....they still wanted to
charge me to insure it every month. They then tried to fiddle me out of
my cashback by offering me a 'free' deal which would have meant that I
never received the crucial final bill...and they very nearly succeeded.
