I'm new to this NG so please be kind to me.
I have recently been made redundant and am looking for ways to reduce outgoings. I currently have an old (BT Cellnet*) contract SIM which is on a now superseded Net100 tariff which gives 200 mins. free calltime for approx GBP 18/month. I have had this contract for more than 8 years (now with O2 of course). This SIM does not work in newer or 3G devices. I also have a 3UK contract USIM which gives 500 mins cross-network mins. + 300 3 to 3 mins. for GBP 23 + WEB add-on at GBP 5 - total GBP 28/month. This 18 month contract is due to expire sometime during May this year. First of all, *I would like to keep both numbers*, as I have no easy way of knowing who knows which number over the past 8+ years. I would like to end my 3UK contract in May as signal strength is poor at home and when out socially (local pub). I guess, I would be better to change the O2 contract to PAYG SIM as I only use it a few mins. per month (my 3UK phone being my main phone and number). Don't laugh, but I was thinking of taking out a contract with Vodafone as they have by far the better coverage in my area. Does anyone know if there is a way to port my O2 contract number to O2 PAYG? Does anyone have any better suggestions? I do like the ease of 3UK 5 pound data allowance for browsing when in good signal area, but not for calls. Regards, Clint |

If you phone up O2 and tell them you want to use a 3G phone, they should send you a new SIM on your existing contract (should you want one). First of all, *I would like to keep both numbers*, as I have no easy way of knowing who knows which number over the past 8+ years. There are various ways of doing this involving forwarding or business contracts, which I'm sure other posters can fill you in on. But today I've been playing with my newly-arrived 25 quid dual SIM phone direct from China (see the 'Dual SIM phones' thread from early Feb where I've just posted a review). While that particular model is a bit clunky and doesn't do 3G, a dual SIM phone might be one option if you want to run both numbers at once, and make outgoing calls on either SIM. That means you can then pick whichever two tariffs suit you and port your numbers to them. I would probably suggest going for one of the big phone manufacturers (eg Samsung, whose phones were mentioned in that thread, or Nokia who are supposedly releasing a dual SIM phone later this year) if you want to use browsing as that's more likely to be hit-and-miss (unless you find a Chinese phone with Symbian/Windows Mobile/Android, when you should be OK) Perhaps this is over-complex for what you want, but just an idea. Get an O2 sim only pack. Request the PAC code from O2 for the contract number. Give them the PAC code to transfer in to the sim only pack. I think this should work. Does anyone have any better suggestions? Asda. 4p / text, 8p / min calls to all uk mobile networks and landlines, and it will stay active as long as you use it once every 3 months or so. Asda uses the vodafone network, which sounds like a bonus for you re coverage. Rgds Denis McMahon |

Rgds Denis McMahon Also 4p text and 8p/min is Giffgaff but, in addition, you get free calls to 0800 numbers(which gives a distinct advantage for using 'callthroughs') and free internet until May. -- Please remove 'no_spam_' from email address.
