It seems that using the S2 as a mobile modem can be more expensive
than at first realised. I was wondering why my monthly mobile dongle Internet allowance and one week Internet add-on weren't lasting very long. It seems that the S2 and my laptop are uploading and downloading considerable amounts of data as soon as a connection is established. The S2 Mobile Modem window shows considerable data transmission. In the 'Signal strength' window (6 bars) there is 'HSDPA,' under this is the upload/download speeds. Clicking on the 'Usage' button below opens up a secondary window that details the uploading and downloading. This is titled 'Data usage measure.' The amount of data being uploaded and downloaded can be monitored. AND WATCHING THIS I WAS CONCERNED TO SEE THAT IT TOOK A MERE 10 MINUTES FOR 1Mb to be transferred - and I was doing no surfing and no other applications were running (except for those listed in Task Manager). The upload rate was twice the download rate - so something was going on. I then started up the Task Manager and the only process that was really active was: System Idle Process. I think that I might have virus although I am running Norton Internet Security and am wondering that maybe my laptop might have gotten to be part of a botnet. But it may also be Norton Internet Security upgrading its virus definitions - but why the uploading? And I don't think that there was any MS updating going on. Are there any tools that I can run to see what is being uploaded and downloaded? There has to be a possible explanation for the large uploads and downloads. Please can someone advise. Many thanks - CJB. |

Get rid of that bloated POS Norton and use a decent virus scanner, or two, and a good firewall. Plus use System Explorer instead of Windows Task Manager. http://systemexplorer.mistergroup.org/index.php |

It seemed to be what I required - once I'd deciphered their web pages (littered with misleading Google Ads). However when I tried to download and install it Norton failed it as a security risk. The exe file was clean, but during the installation Norton detected something called SONAR embedded in it. The installation then stopped, and Norton required me to restart the computer to fully remove the (presumed) virus. Chris B. |

Meanwhile I got a SMS from 3 warning that me that my one week Internet add-on was due to expire. It stated that I could check my usage and balance by going to My3. However My3 still wittled on about Internet Add-on being Fair Use. It didn't tell me how much I started with (1Gb ???) nor how much I had left. Whe I called into a 3 Store (in Kingston) the manager there said that he didn't know how much data the £2.50 one week add-on allowance was for (neither for the 50p one day, nor £5 one month). He looked on the web site under t&c and that didn't say either. He also said that it was not possible to find out how much of the add- on I had left!!!! He also opined that I shouldn't be using the S2 as a modem using the Internet add-on option. CJB. |

They seem to want to reserve the right to chuck you off for inappropriate
use at whatever level suits them this week. My guess would be that the £5 a month probably gets you 500MB before they'll start noticing you. That would be in-line with Vodafone and, more or less, O2. Yes as far as I remember the terms and conditions of the 50p/day, £2.50/wk and £5/month options say they are only for browsing on your phone. Hopefully in this case 'browsing' includes watching Youtube videos etc as well as just looking at web pages. -- Brian Gregory. (In the UK) To email me remove the letter vee. |

If 3 supply a proprietary phone aka the S2 that can be used as a mobile modem then why is such use against the t&c.? They even supply the software drivers and an app. called PC Suite. And they have a term for this - MIFI. Strange then that they say that this is not suppose to be. CJB. |
