This does work, but is fiddly to set up, but once done it works very well

The SIP works fine over wi-fi, with good call quality, quick set up etc.

Well, that rather depends on what's at the other end of the wifi. I
assume
you mean ADSL or cable? Here it's a router with a builtin 3G dongle, so
it's pretty much the same whether it's over wifi or the phone does the 3G.

There is a slight increase in battery drain.

That's useful to know... I did wonder if such apps ate batteries for
breakfast. If you leave such an app on all the time, how much battery
life
do you get?

Days, but I am 200m from a macro cell. When I go to my sister's in the
sticks battery life is MUCH lower even with the w-fi off.

GPS slugs it too, although obviously you have the display illuminated a lot
too.

Unexpectedly once set up over wi-fi it also works over 3G outbound and
less
reliably inbound (if you are mobile), however the call quality is poor
and
most service providers will cut you off if they notice.

What do you mean that it's less reliable inbound? That registration fails
because it doesn't send keepalive packets?

One way of improving battery life is to limit the registration check to
every several minutes.

On GSM the base stations constantly monitor the phone and tell it when to
switch (hand off) a connection. Not so the Voip connection, so although an
outgoing call will usually succeed because the phone will re-initialise the
voip connection if necessary, there is no way to make this happen in the
reverse direction until the phone tries again.

Thanks, I'll have a look. Currently the N70 is driving me up the wall
refusing to connect to the network, not giving me traffic, or automatically
connecting to the wrong APN. I'm not sure if this is the result of Fring
(which starts automatically), but Fring has frozen the phone solid (to the
extent of taking out the battery a few times). Which is disappointing as it
worked nicely the first time I installed it.

Also, you can occasionally find secondhand wi-fi only phones for
pretty modest prices

Unfortunately, not in Africa you don't. Think battered dusty ancient phones
in the market for about the new price (even when you haggle)

Don't you have ebay?

ISTR most of the scams on eBay involved an African link at one time. There
still are quite a number of sellers who specifically state they will not
send items to some African (and certain other) countries.

I myself (as well as people I know) have been contacted in the past by
African scammers after the end of some auctions which I have shown an
interest in. Admittedly that was some time ago and eBay have tightened
things up in more recent times to make it more difficult for the scammers to
know the names of people who might be bidding on items.

Heve you tried Fring? I have a Onesuite VoIP service and it is SIP based
and I can set it up on my Windows Mobile phone using Fring. Skype also
runs on Fring although I think Fring already remove it because Skype
threaten Fring. But on some Windows Mboile phones, Skype is already
installed.

So basically, WinMo phones can use Fring and you can set it up to any
SIP based VoIP service like what I did with my Onesuite VoIP.

Yes, Fring is what I ended up using. It worked out the cheapest option
because it was only taking 2KB/s each way, while other solutions like
Nimbuzz were taking considerably more.

It wasn't helped by the fact that the best data tariff I could find was 25c
per 0.25MB, which meant that any data connection at all eats 25c. So if it
drops (and it does) it costs you another 25c each time. Plus Fring seems to
like connecting randomly when it isn't told to.

Fring on the N70 (S60 v2) is poor, and crashes lots (and regularly crashes
the phone). But that's all I had available, so that's what I had to stick
with. Fring isn't started unless necessary, and the phone is restarted
straight after. That means it's not a lot of use for incoming calls.

In answer to the other old question, nope there's no eBay. There's no post,
so eBay isn't an option. The only way to get things in and out of the
country is sending them with a passenger on a plane, or DHL at 50 quid a
package.

I might try Fring on a more modern phone and see what happens...
