Default Compliment re T-Mobile renewal: monthly discount!

I have a T-Mobile G1 on an 18-month contract with flext (calls, texts,
internet). I'm happy with it.
The 18-month anniversary/renewal came up last month.
On the website renewal bit in My T-Mobile, T-Mobile offered me a phone
upgrade or a 20% discount on monthly fee if I renewed for 18 months.
Took the monthly discount offer and the webpage confirmation said "Your
£6 discount will be applied to your account starting with your next
bill." £6 is the correct rate at 20% (monthly rate was previously
£30/month).
Shortly after, got an e-mail saying "As a special thank you we have
applied a monthly discount of 12.00 to your account".
I took this with a pinch of salt, and thought I'd wait and see.
Got my monthly bill this week, and sure enough, £12/month credit on there.
One happy customer.
(so either T-Mobile are being generous or their maths is a bit wayward)

So you opted for a £108 discount when you could have got a £250 phone
instead?

Refund ended up being £216 (GBP12 @ 18 months), so pretty close to
break-even, and I quite like my G1 at the moment. Might change it next
time round.

And not only that but why do people feel the need to constantly have a new
phone? I'm no tree hugging greenie but even I can see that it is so fekkin
wasteful that it's practically obscene.
