A friend & daughter are returning from the usa to live in the UK.

They have i-phones which she is hoping to get AT&T to unlock for her - or
would she be better going down the jailbreaking route?

She is going to live in a house that has poor mobile coverage, but the best
signal is from Vodafone.

She will maybe need 100 mins and 100 txts and daughter with the same phone
will need 100 mins and 'unlimited' texts.

Any suggestions for sim only 'contracts' on the voda network.

See http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/sim-.../all-sim-plans

Cheapest is £10 a month for 100mins, 500 texts on a 30-day rolling contract.
Sign up for a year and get 300mins, unlimited texts for the same price.

Adding the internet costs £5/month and gives a 500MB allowance. There are
more expensive tariffs that are 'made for iPhone' that include 1GB data but
for most a 500MB allowance is sufficient.

If the 12-month plans appeal you can get cashback through TopCashBack.co.uk
and similar websites. I believe there's £70 up for grabs at the moment.
Clear your cookies before going through the process so as to increase the
chances the link-through tracks.

Hmm, so for £15 she could get 100 mins, 500 texts and 500mb internet?
Sounds better than the 20 quid 'all in' package which may be excessive for
her use.

Yes. Or with more mins and text for a 1 year commitment.

Depends what usage they anticipate really. The 30 day tariffs can be
changed up/down every month if required to.

AT&T will provide the unlock code for all their phones EXCEPT the
iPhone. I believe their agreement with apple prohibits it.

Yep, it seems that way. I spoke to someone at Orange (on a different matter)
and they suggested contacting Apple in the usa.
I'll get her to try that and report back.

I wonder why they prohibit it?

I know its not a contract as such, but consider PAYG AsdaMobile; 100minutes
and 50 texts for a tenner, and its on Voda network.

Better to stick with Vodafone if it's a poor signal area. It gives you the
option of using a Sure Cell booster to improve the signal around the house:

Worth asking AT&T, since no such problem applies in the UK. Typically in
the UK you just pay a small fee to the operator to unlock an iPhone
officially if it's out of contract, or a much larger fee if you also
want to buy your way out of a contract commitment, effectively paying
back some of the handset subsidy.
