Default Sound quality of different handsets

This may be a simplistic question for the group, but is there much
difference in performance between a cheap and an expensive handset?
Obviously there is a big difference in functionality and features,
such as camera, MP3 player, internet capability etc but does the
handset have much influence on audio quality? I know for example
there are difficulties with the new iPhone. I have bought a Samsung
E1170 at a very low price and I am wondering if there is much of a
penalty in terms of quality for just making and receiving calls.

Can't answer your question as such, but I have a hearing problem and am
delighted with the sound volume and quality on my HTC HD2 - it's the first
phone I've had where I haven't had to use a headset, even outside. In fact
there are times when I could even turn the volume down - except for my other
problem - my memory - I can never remember how to do it just when I want
to!!!

Yes expensive handsets have Enhanced full rate

OTOH cheap handsets have it now. There may be an option to enable it in the
phone.

I think just about every phone made in the last 15 years has had EFR,
though some networks (O2/Voda) seem to drop to half rate at busy
periods.

You may be thinking of AMR-WB (HD Voice) that's only available on a 3
or 4 new (mainly) Nokia high end handsets, though only Orange support
this at present.
