I want to be able to send bulk messages online and specify the sender of
the messages. It will only be an average of 1 message per month sent to
around 20 people.

Obviously because of the low value messages I only need to topup with
about £15 per year. I don't want to use any sites offering free text
messages because it's for business purposes and needs to look
professional and comply with DPA.

Can anyone suggest a site that would do this?

I use one of the many Betamax clones for this, it's mainly a VoIP
service, but I think you will find the SMS exactly what you want. I use
smartvoip but if I wanted it exclusively for UK SMS I would use
telbo.com That is what I would recommend to you:-

You download an application for making voice calls and sending SMS. The
ID of the sender can be set to any from a list of 5 verified numbers.
The numbers can be mobile, landline or VoIP, and can be UK or foreign.

I was hoping for something where I could specify the name of the company
as the sender ID rather than an actual mobile number.

One final thing that is not even documented on the Betamax sites, is
that you don't have to use the application to send the SMS, you could
develop your own, or simply use some pre-prepared shortcuts containing a
URL in the following format.

That might work, can I specify multiple recipients in a single message?
Can I send this via the POST method to stop my password appearing in the
proxy server logs?

I did also want (although not mandatory) delivery receipts.

There is a site called ITagg which is ideal. It lets me send messages
online, to multiple recipients, I put anything I want as the sender ID
and it supports delivery receipts. The downside is, the minimum topup
amount has increased from £10 to £200!

Meanwhile, at the uk.telecom.mobile Job Justification Hearings, Rad chose
the tried and tested strategy of:

Can I send this via the POST method to stop my password appearing in the
proxy server logs?

It's HTTPS so it's unlikely to.

That's just what I need.

I especially like how it lets me include the name of the recipient in the
message. That will allow me to send a bulk message but look personal at
the same time.

Would have suggested a firm but they don't offer that facility.

Why would you need to be using a proxy server ?

Looks like you'll have to 'bite the bullet' then.

Rip-off.
https://www.textmagic.com/app/buysignup
I make that about 8p inc VAT per text with the amount of credit the OP wants to spend.

Having said that I still have TextMagic installed on one of the PCs here, a legacy
of when SWMBO was doing some admin from home for a local firm.

Because I can't reach the Internet without it!

Someone else already suggested another site that does everything I want
and the minimum fee is ~£4
