Default EE Calling Abroad Costs

It's like getting blood from a stone !

I've been round and round EE's website, and eventually I found this:-

<http://help.ee.co.uk/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1016&PARTITIO N_ID=1&secureFlag=false&segment=consumer&TIMEZONE_ OFFSET=&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=20032&CUSTOM_B RAND=EE#

It talks about a 'free' add on called CALL ABROAD that you text to 411, that
gives cheaper rates for calling abroad.

I've just had a totally useless 'web chat' with an EE helpline person.

She said there are no published rates for the add on, and further
more you cannot make any foreign calls without adding one of the add-ons.

Which rather begs the question, how can the rates be cheaper than not using an
add on ?!

Am I going mad, and does anyone have any idea what the foreign calling rates
from the UK are ?

Try this one if you are on Orange
http://help.ee.co.uk/system/selfserv...D=VIEW_ARTICLE
or this one if you are on T-Mobile
http://help.ee.co.uk/system/selfserv...D=VIEW_ARTICLE

Interesting to note that if you are going abroad they advise that
you should put a message on your voicemail and then set divert
all calls (i.e. immediate) to voicemail. Except that you can't do
it on PAYG!

Doh

Those are very useful, but I was trying to figure out what it would be with EE
themselves, because they do a quite a good Euro Roaming deal, for making calls
within 'call allowance' when in Europe and EU countries.

Perhaps I should widen the scope of what I'm asking.

I'm considering going self employed, and the industry I'm in requires
travel abroad, Europe and further afield. Also, though of course there
are VOIP style solutions to assist, I would need to be making calls from
the UK to those countries.

I've been going round in circles looking at all four UK networks, and
info and packages for the sort of activity I'd use is very poor and vague.
Even in the so called 'Business' portals of the networks.

Advice gratefully received. I'm tempted to use Giff Gaff, but their T&Cs
prohibit business use, and I suspect itemised billing and tax invoices etc
aren't really possible !?

I am slightly in the same boat. I have had the same (Orange)
number for 14 years and many many people outside the Co know that
number but may only ring me once a year or less. When I took
early retirement recently my employer agreed to me keeping the
number on PAYG but only then do you find the problems, the main
being that the only way to get the phone to go to immediate
divert to voicemail is by switching it off. Immediate divert -
which I have used for years - is not available to PAYG customers;
it is with O2 and VF but not Orange/T-Mobile.

In your need to make outgoing calls to Europe, 3 do a good idea
where you dial a shortform, e.g. 427 for France, and thereafter
calls are charged at your UK rate. What charge you see for
dialling the shortform I do not know.

If this option suits why not have one of the newer phones that
will carry two SIMs, fill one with 321 and the other with one of
the specialist roaming SIMs that give you a UK number presented
on a local number in the country you are visiting so you pay no
receipt charges?

Also get yourself a VoIP account with something like Sipgate or
VoIPcheap, then load a SIP app on your phone (I use Sipdroid) and
make all of your outgoing calls abroad from a free wi-fi area or
(dare I say it) McDonalds. You can set the CLI to whatever you
want so it could show your mobile number or your home or VoIP
number.

I am about to off into Europe on hols and find - surprise
surprise - that the PAYG call and text rates for calls inside
Europe are - with 0.5p - identical for all SPs, doubtless as a
result of the homologation that took place on 1st July. That is
25p/min Tx, 7p/min Rx and 8p for text Tx (Rx is free data is
frightening at around 42-45p/Mb!!!!!

One of the problems of retiring is that you don't know how much
you will need to use your mobile. If I go on at my present rate I
will need to start sending texts to prevent being cut off -
somehow I think my wife is right that I cannot justify a
contract.....
