Sorry to pepper so many questions at you lot, but got another one.

In France now and the mifi happily shows it's connected to "orange" with
2/3 bars and a 3G symbol. However, when connecting to it via Wi-Fi on our
phones results in no internet connectivity.

The admin interface shows as "disconnected" yet it received several texts
from EE (it's one of their Sims) welcoming the device to France.

Any ideas why it won't route any IP traffic? I did register the SIM in the
UK before we left and checked it worked.

This is a bit unclear to me.

Are you using a wi-fi unit to provide Internet access for your phones?
If so have you tried it with data roaming turned off off?

Have you tried a tablet or laptop on the connection?

Are your phones or whatever connecting to the wi-fi and just not
getting Internet access, or are they not connecting at all?

If you have a connection to the phone has it asked you for the access
password to get Interweb access?

Final and silliest question - you are wi-fi connected/connecting to
your own wi-fi aren't you?

Yes.

If so have you tried it with data roaming turned off off?

What does that mean?

Have you tried a tablet or laptop on the connection?

No. All we have are phones.

Are your phones or whatever connecting to the wi-fi and just not
getting Internet access, or are they not connecting at all?

The former. They connect to the mifi, but not getting internet.

If you have a connection to the phone has it asked you for the access
password to get Interweb access?

Well, the unit is known to all the phones and they have cached the password
already.

Final and silliest question - you are wi-fi connected/connecting to
your own wi-fi aren't you?

Yes. I changed the SSID to something obvious.

If you have an Android phone, on the start screen swipe down from the
very top of the screen and you will get some icons. Find the one
marked 'mobile data' and touch it to turn it off. Your phone will now
only work on wi-fi and not mobile data.

Equally go to the set-up menu and select mobile data near the top and
turn it off.

For an iPhone, at the front page swipe upwards from the bottom. About
half a page of icons will appear one of which relates to mobile data.
Touch it and the icon will grey out so again you are only working on
wi-fi.

Neither of these changes affect normal speech phone and texting
operation, only data for Internet and such as WhatsApp and Skype.

This does vary. On my phone, it's an icon marked (at present) "4G". Touch
that and then there's a set of 'switches'. One is mobile data.

Perhaps for whatever reason, the billing system thinks the SIM has no
credit/contract?

Is the APN setup correctly? That would result in SMS working, but no IP
traffic.

How would I know? In the device under "profile list" it only lists "orange
(D)". The APN is orange.fr and all the settings are greyed out.

It worked fine at home.

I don't think that's the issue. Wi-Fi is working ok with device and 3G on
the phones works also via orange France. It's when trying to use the 3G
credit available via the mifi that we can't access internet.

Three of us are on Three PAYG so it made sense to buy a chunk of data for
all of us to share while away rather than the 1p/MB.

Hang on - the APN is orange.fr? Who is the SIM from? For some reason I
thought it was 3UK? If so, you'll need to be using the 3 APN and not
Oranges...
