You'll know more of what it is about when your TV goes off! Most of the
fibre interfaces installed by BT for DSO are Huawei who monitor it on
behalf of BT.

Especially as O2 infrastructure is Ericson.

Their 4G / LTE is off altogether and 3G / UMTS seems able to make calls, but not pass data.

It would take quite some software error to screw up basic Ethernet protocol and spanning tree algorithm and not be able to quickly revert to previous version, so one wonders what has actually happened.

I read something similar.

It takes a particular level of incompetence to have a common mode fault bring down your entire network.

While it was going on BT first took down their 4G /LTE network and later their 3G / UMTS network.

The quick avoidance was to over-ride the date in the switches, although sorting out the billing later could have been a headache.

There were a lot of people moaning about lack of connectivity. OK I am a BT customer and can use their 5M Wi-Fi hot spots, however even without them I am rarely out of Wi_fi coverage - bus, shops, pub etc. I do ~10GB per month on Wi-Fi and only about 100MB on net.

Calls and SMS carried on working, although MMS might not (on mine it requires network data to be on). I didn't try my old phone, which still uses GPRS / Edge even if 3G data is switched off.
