There was talk about this a while ago, hadn't heard anything for ages.
How the **** did they get approval for this level of spending without
even checking the legality of it..?

Tried and tested purchasing methodology.

Though not as good as three water cannons :-)

Those were a brilliant idea in my opinion, fill 'em with the waste
products of several van-loads of coppers after six hours cooped up on a
stake-out. That would put off potential troublemakers if you ask me..!

There was nothing with getting them, they might have been grateful for
them if there had been more riots in London.

But it got very political.

Police using technology to warn drivers using mobile devices in vehicles
<https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-47896472

Of course the technology can't differentiate between drivers or
passengers (or presumably nearby pedestrians), or other drivers, can't
tell if you're using a non-bluetooth handsfree (e.g vehicles using RSAP)
can't differentiate between voice calls and data for streaming podcasts
or using satnav ...

It does seem a rather pointless (but expensive) exercise. Though I
suppose the technology could be useful in locations where all mobile
phone use is prohibited.

Presumably if the new emergency service network ever gets off the ground
then any emergency vehicle using their radio will trigger the sign as
well if they using one of the mobile networks.
